Overview

A leading healthcare organization in Boston is seeking a Radiation Medicine Therapist to join its Radiation Oncology department.

Reporting to the Chief Radiation Medicine Therapist, this position is responsible for safely and accurately delivering prescribed radiation treatments using modern radiation therapy equipment. The successful candidate will prepare and position patients, operate treatment equipment, monitor patients throughout procedures and maintain accurate treatment documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Radiation Therapy Delivery

  • Deliver prescribed radiation treatments accurately and safely.

  • Review treatment charts to confirm prescriptions, treatment times and prescribed dosages.

  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment according to established procedures.

  • Position patients correctly and adjust treatment equipment and controls.

  • Place treatment blocks, wedges and other devices as required.

  • Operate radiation therapy equipment to administer the prescribed dosage.

  • Monitor patients during treatment using visual and intercom systems.

  • Verify treatment settings and ensure that all required safety procedures are followed.

Patient Care

  • Explain treatment procedures clearly and sensitively to patients.

  • Reassure patients and provide guidance regarding expected treatment reactions and the care of irradiated areas.

  • Assist patients in transferring from wheelchairs or lifting devices to treatment tables when necessary.

  • Monitor patients for physical changes or adverse reactions, including skin changes, nausea and throat discomfort.

  • Consult the appropriate physician when a patient’s condition may require assessment before treatment.

  • Maintain professional, compassionate and respectful relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and colleagues.

Treatment Planning and Documentation

  • Record the precise radiation dosage delivered in each patient’s treatment chart.

  • Prepare and update diagrams documenting treatment fields and changes to the original setup.

  • Confirm that required blood counts, imaging and verification films are satisfactory and properly recorded.

  • Calculate surface, depth, cumulative and total radiation doses when required.

  • Assist the Radiation Physicist with patient measurements, contours and treatment-plan verification.

  • Maintain complete, accurate and confidential patient records.

Equipment and Department Support

  • Inspect equipment safety interlocks according to established procedures.

  • Monitor equipment performance and report malfunctions promptly.

  • Clean and maintain treatment equipment and clinical work areas.

  • Ensure treatment rooms remain appropriately stocked with required supplies.

  • Support appointment scheduling, filing and other related clinical or technical duties.

  • Participate in patient-care conferences, educational programs and professional meetings.

  • Remain current with developments in radiation therapy techniques and technology.

  • Follow all applicable infection-control, patient-safety and confidentiality procedures.

  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent education in Radiation Medicine or Radiation Therapy from an accredited institution.

  • Knowledge of radiation therapy procedures, equipment operation and appropriate equipment setup.

  • At least three to six months of relevant practical or on-the-job training.

  • Ability to work onsite in Boston for the assigned 20-hour weekly schedule.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to determine the correct equipment and patient setup for radiation treatment.

  • Ability to calculate treatment duration and support radiation-dose calculations.

  • Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to adverse treatment reactions.
