The Opportunity
A leading academic healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Inpatient Phlebotomy Manager to lead a high-performing laboratory service in Boston. This senior role combines people leadership, laboratory operations, quality assurance and financial oversight in a complex clinical environment where accuracy, safety and patient experience are paramount.
Reporting to the Operations Director for Pathology, you will guide inpatient phlebotomy services, strengthen quality and compliance, develop staff and help ensure reliable specimen collection and transport across the healthcare network.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide operational and people leadership for inpatient phlebotomy and associated laboratory services.
• Take responsibility for staffing, performance management, employee engagement, competency, training, scheduling and payroll accuracy.
• Maintain a technically sound, patient-focused environment that supports safe, timely and high-quality laboratory services.
• Oversee operating and capital budgets, staffing costs, overtime, billing accuracy, revenue integrity and return-on-investment analysis.
• Monitor quality and compliance data, lead corrective actions and support hospital-wide quality and patient-safety programs.
• Ensure readiness for CAP, The Joint Commission, CLIA, OSHA, DPH, FDA, AABB and other applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain current policies, procedures, proficiency testing, equipment maintenance records and service agreements.
• Evaluate and implement new methodologies, equipment and technologies that improve laboratory performance.
• Partner with medical, nursing, laboratory, HR and supply-chain colleagues to improve service, specimen transport and staff utilization.
• Provide 24/7 call coverage and travel between Boston-area locations when required.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or an applied science such as chemistry, biology or biochemistry.
• At least three years of clinical laboratory experience.
• In-depth knowledge of laboratory accreditation and compliance requirements, particularly CAP and The Joint Commission.
• Strong scientific understanding of clinical laboratory operations and the ability to guide technical problem-solving.
• Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work onsite full-time and travel between Boston, Brockton and Brighton.
• Current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
• ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician or relevant specialty professional.
• Previous supervisory or management experience in a clinical laboratory or inpatient phlebotomy environment.
• Experience managing budgets, quality programs, regulatory inspections and multidisciplinary laboratory teams.
