The Opportunity
A leading defense engineering organization is seeking a Lead Principal Engineer to serve as a senior technical authority for the MK48 torpedo program. This is a high-impact opportunity to own complex electronic-system architecture while remaining closely involved in design reviews, laboratory investigations, integration, qualification, production and sustainment.
You will guide multidisciplinary teams developing mission-critical undersea systems and help translate demanding operational needs into reliable, producible and secure engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
• Define, develop and evaluate electronic-system and hardware architectures spanning digital, analog, power-electronics and mechanical elements.
• Translate system requirements into clear hardware requirements, interfaces and robust design solutions.
• Lead complex circuit design, modeling, simulation, integration, verification and qualification activities, contributing directly to investigations when needed.
• Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, cybersecurity, producibility, cost, schedule and lifecycle objectives.
• Provide technical direction to digital, analog, power-electronics, mechanical, software and test engineers.
• Lead design reviews, architecture assessments, failure reviews, trade studies and root-cause investigations.
• Identify technical risks, assess program impacts and develop effective mitigation strategies.
• Develop corrective actions and design improvements using test results, failure data and engineering analysis.
• Evaluate embedded processors, SoCs, FPGAs, memory devices and high-speed digital interfaces for current and future applications.
• Support product roadmaps, technology insertion, technical proposals and future capability development.
• Identify practical uses of artificial intelligence for engineering analysis, automation and continuous improvement.
• Communicate technical decisions, findings and risks to engineering leaders, program teams, customers and suppliers.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related science, engineering, technology or mathematics discipline.
• At least 10 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree plus at least eight years of relevant experience.
• Expert-level electrical or electronic architecture experience and expert-level FPGA experience.
• Extensive experience designing, integrating and troubleshooting complex electronic systems involving analog, digital, power-electronics and mechanical interfaces.
• Ability to make, communicate and defend system- and hardware-architecture decisions.
• Experience with embedded processors, FPGA or SoC systems, memory technologies and high-speed digital interfaces.
• Experience with DC/DC and DC/AC conversion, power distribution and power-system design.
• Proficiency with schematics, PCB layouts, bills of material, interface documentation and design-analysis artifacts.
• Knowledge of signal integrity, power integrity, grounding, shielding, EMC, component derating and electronic reliability.
• Hands-on laboratory capability using oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, logic analyzers, probes and related equipment.
• Experience supporting products through development, qualification, production, sustainment, failure investigation and corrective action.
• United States citizenship and ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance within a reasonable period after hire.
Preferred Experience
• Serial interfaces operating at 5 Gbps or above.
• Mixed-signal circuit design and high-frequency magnetics.
• Electronic assemblies integrated into complex or constrained mechanical systems.
• Siemens EDA or Mentor Graphics, OrCAD, PSpice, LTspice, Mathcad or equivalent tools.
• Undersea, naval, defense, aerospace or other high-reliability electronic systems.
• DoD systems engineering, cybersecurity, qualification and configuration-management practices.
• Requirements traceability, verification planning, production readiness, obsolescence management, technology insertion and design certification.
• Earned Value Management and Control Account Management principles.
Benefits
• Comprehensive healthcare benefits
• 401(k) matching
• Paid parental leave
• Health and wellness programs
• Employee resource and social groups
• Continuous learning and development opportunities
• Interview travel reimbursement
The Ideal Candidate
You are a senior electronics architect who can move confidently between system-level decisions and hands-on technical investigation. You bring deep FPGA and electronic-architecture expertise, sound technical judgement and the ability to lead through influence across multiple engineering disciplines. Experience in undersea or other high-reliability defense systems will be particularly valuable.
Equal Opportunity
Qualified applicants will receive consideration without discrimination based on any status protected under applicable federal, state or local law.
