Lead Exceptional Care for Mothers and Babies

A respected community hospital in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is seeking an experienced Director of Obstetrics Nursing to lead its Labor and Delivery and maternal-newborn services.

This senior nursing leadership opportunity combines clinical oversight, staff development, quality improvement and operational leadership within a family-centered obstetrics environment. The hospital operates as a Level I Maternal Care and Nursery facility, providing personalized care to mothers, newborns and families throughout the surrounding communities.

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director will lead a dedicated OB nursing team, maintain high clinical and regulatory standards and help shape the future of maternal and newborn care across the region.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for Labor and Delivery, obstetrics and maternal-newborn nursing services.

  • Coordinate safe, effective and patient-centered care using the nursing process.

  • Identify and resolve operational or clinical issues affecting the delivery of care.

  • Serve as a clinical resource to nursing staff, providers, hospital leadership and external stakeholders.

  • Support effective patient flow and ensure appropriate coordination throughout the maternal-care journey.

  • Maintain a visible leadership presence and assist clinically when departmental needs require it.

Quality and Patient Safety

  • Lead performance-improvement studies and support the implementation of related initiatives.

  • Monitor maternal and newborn quality outcomes, patient-safety measures and departmental performance.

  • Develop practical action plans in response to identified quality or service concerns.

  • Promote evidence-based practices across Labor and Delivery and newborn care.

  • Ensure departmental compliance with accreditation, legal, regulatory and Joint Commission requirements.

  • Maintain current clinical standards, policies and procedures.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, retain, develop and engage a high-performing team of OB nurses.

  • Coordinate staffing schedules to support safe coverage and operational requirements.

  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.

  • Identify staff-development needs and coordinate continuing education and competency activities.

  • Mentor nursing professionals and encourage career growth within the department.

  • Foster a collaborative, accountable and supportive team culture.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Build strong working relationships among nursing staff, physicians, providers and executive leadership.

  • Address disagreements or operational challenges professionally and constructively.

  • Communicate departmental priorities, risks and performance outcomes to senior leadership.

  • Partner with other clinical and operational departments to improve care coordination.

  • Support organizational change while maintaining staff engagement and patient-care quality.

Patient and Family Education

  • Coordinate patient and family education relating specifically to Labor and Delivery.

  • Ensure educational materials and practices reflect current clinical standards.

  • Promote compassionate, inclusive and family-centered communication.

  • Support patients and families throughout pregnancy, delivery and newborn care.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing school.

  • Current, unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse license.

  • Professional Labor and Delivery nursing experience.

  • Current Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.

  • Ability to work onsite in Hancock, Michigan.

  • Current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

  • Annual influenza vaccination or formal declination, as required by hospital policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

  • At least four years of Labor and Delivery experience.

  • At least two years of healthcare or nursing leadership experience.

  • Experience leading maternal, newborn, Labor and Delivery or women’s health services.

  • Experience with staff recruitment, retention, scheduling and performance management.

  • Demonstrated success improving maternal or newborn quality outcomes.

  • Knowledge of hospital accreditation, regulatory compliance and Joint Commission standards.

  • Experience leading performance-improvement initiatives.

The following certifications are strongly preferred, either current or obtained within the first year of employment:

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

  • AWHONN Electronic Fetal Monitoring

  • AWHONN Perinatal Orientation and Education Program

  • S.T.A.B.L.E. Program
